Efforts to protect the environment are attracting attention, and the automotive industry is
strongly demanding the development of eco-friendly technologies such as electrification. In
addition, there is a need for innovation in elemental technologies for automated driving to
provide safety and peace of mind. Semiconductors are becoming increasingly important as a
component technology for these systems. In many countries, national funds have been invested to
strengthen the competitiveness of the semiconductor industry.
In electrification, we would like to show our expectations for semiconductor devices and
materials in power electronics technology, which plays a very important role in reducing BEV
batteries and improving electric mileage. In addition, we will also briefly introduce our
expectations for SoCs and object detection sensors for fully automated driving.
We look forward to having fruitful discussions with researchers who specialize in semiconductor
device and materials technology about the further potential of semiconductor technology for the
automotive industry.
Dr. Matsugatani received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Kyoto University in 1987
and 1989, respectively. He joined DENSO CORPORATION in 1989, where he focused on studies related
to MMIC and antenna technologies for RADAR applications. In 2010, he received his Ph.D. degree
from Nagoya Institute of Technology. Throughout his career at DENSO CORPORATION, he has held
various leadership positions including Director of Research and Development Division 3 in 2010,
Director of ADAS Business and Technology Development Division in 2016, and Executive Director,
Head of Engineering in Europe in 2017, and Executive Officer, Head of Engineering in North
America in 2019. Currently he is the Senior Director of Corporate R&D Center at DENSO
COPRORATION and serves as a Member of the Board for MIRISE Technologies Corporation.
